The Cinder Cone elevates the pyramid category with superior ventilation, livability, and setup. It excels everywhere from ambitious ski touring objectives to river trips to ultralight backpacking. The Cinder Cone hits the sweet spot for an ultralight, spacious, and reliable shelter that disappears into your pack when you're on the move.

Slingfin's main goal was to create the best-pitching pyramid on the market. They borrowed a reinforcement technique from the parachute industry called Radial Seam Tape, in which we insert a strip of polyester webbing inside all four corner seams to eliminate bias stretch, creating perfectly tensioned side panels and maintaining structural integrity when the nylon elongates in wet conditions.

Another goal was to make the best ventilated pyramid available. Our dual upper thru-vents and large low vent provide more airflow than peak vents, and our novel Perimeter Pull Vents allow the bottom edges to be pulled up in the center, creating a chimney effect when paired with the upper vents that minimizes condensation.

Finally, to make the Cinder Cone the easiest pyramid to set up, they added a Dyneema "Quick-Pitch" cord from corner to corner. The Quick-Pitch cord sets the correct distance between the corners, giving you a perfect pitch every time and avoiding the dreaded "Rhombus". If you've set up a mid before, you get it. The Quick-Pitch cord can be easily unclipped when the tent is in use.

The ALUULA™ top cap reinforcement has the best durability of any lightweight fabric on the market and allows the Cinder Cone to be set up with ski poles, trekking poles, a kayak paddle, a carbon I-pole, or anything else you can dream up. To set up the Cinder Cone with ski poles or trekking poles, use two of our SlingFin Voile Straps to strap your pole handles together.

The Cinder Cone can be paired with the Cinder Cone Mesh Body for a luxuriously spacious ultralight summer backpacking shelter or with the Cinder Cone Tub Floor for sleeping on wet ground in bug-free conditions.

About slingfin

SlingFin was founded in 2010 with one simple goal. Build the strongest, most innovative, no-expense-spared outdoor equipment in the world.

Slingfin represents the sum total of founder Martin Zemitis’ three decades of experience in the outdoor industry. After designing for The North Face and Sierra Designs for around a decade he co-founded Mountain Hardwear, where he designed equipment until 2009. Eventually he began to desire more freedom to design without the constraints of price targets and decided it was time to take things in a new direction. Soon thereafter, SlingFin was born.

Slingfin started making high alpine-focused dream tents that people on Everest would use as windbreaks for other tents. After a while, they realized the demand for shelters that can stand up to the elements extends well beyond the high alpine. Since then they’ve kept the strength-to-weight ratio of their tents at the forefront of their product development process. Choosing materials that improve the long-term durability of the products even if they’re more expensive, because they believe a good tent should be a long-term investment. Through thoughtful design, premium materials, and a deep understanding of tensile structures, Slingfin have created a full lineup of tents that can withstand much harsher conditions than other tents in their weight class.

SlingFin is an employee-owned, self-funded company. This means no suits, no “bean-counters”, and no pressure to maximize profit at the expense of quality. They’re small, lean, and scrappy, and they like it that way. Making the gear they want to use, not the gear a VC firm thinks will get them the best ROI. Their designs are inspired by the desire for stronger, lighter gear. Drawing on their deep industry heritage and passion for the outdoors to ensure that the materials, attention to detail, and build quality of their products are impeccable.
